NUT Boss Describes Teachers as Pillars of Society

Against the background of the World Teachers Day held on Monday, Mr Gunsling Yarlings, Chairman, National Union of Teachers (NUT) in Plateau, has described teachers as” pillars of every society.’’ “Teachers are the pillars of every society.
“You have bad teachers, there will be a bad society, just like good teachers will give birth to a good and productive system,” Yarlings told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos on Tuesday.
He said that it was a testimony to teachers’ crucial place in the society that any decay was usually attributed to their failure in discharging their duties.
The NUT boss said that the Teachers Day should provide a platform through which issues affecting teachers would be examined and solutions proffered.
“The date should serve as a reminder to governments to create enabling environment for teachers to perform their duties diligently,” he said.
The NUT official called for more learning materials as well as more openings for improved education for teachers to keep them abreast with modern teaching methods.
“The training and retraining of teachers should be a constant factor so as to update teachers’ skills and boost their morale and confidence before the students,” he said.
Teachers, he said, belong to an indispensable group that every society seeking to grow must respect.
He urged governments and school proprietors to ensure that teachers were paid their salaries, pointing out that no teacher would perform optimally on an empty stomach.
“Teachers will also be motivated if they get their promotions as at when due and also receive commendations when they excelled,” he said.
NAN reports that the World Teachers Day was introduced by UNESCO in 1994 to celebrate teachers and mobilise support for their union.
