Shocking Photos: 80-Year-Old Tomy Ward Left For Dead

The family of an 80-year-old former soldier have released shocking pictures of him in hospital after he was beaten up by burglars who took his life savings. Tommy Ward, who was also a miner, was left for dead with a fractured skull, broken ribs and a broken jaw.

Surgeons operated for six hours in an effort to treat an horrific scalp wound.
He also suffered a bleed on his brain and doctors cannot say at this stage how far he may recover.

After the attack at his home in Maltby, South Yorkshire, the thieves made off with his life savings of £30,000.
His daughter Jackie Perry told Sky News: "I couldn't believe it when I saw him. He was unrecognisable.
"I have been crying in the night thinking about him. The family have been sleeping with their mobile phones next to the pillow because we are just so worried about him.
"Who could do this to anybody let alone an 80-year-old man."
Mrs Perry said her father kept his savings in the house because he was "old-fashioned and of the generation that sometimes didn't bother with banks".
Tommy once served in the Army with the Norfolk and Northumberland Fusiliers.
His family described him as a real character but one who was increasingly frail even before the attack.
He insisted on staying alone in the house he shared with his wife until she died four years ago.
An online "crowd fund" has raised more than £2,000 for the pensioner within 12 hours of his story being made public.
His family say they have been "deeply moved" by the caring comments posted on social media.
"It has been the one comforting thing about this nightmare," said Jackie. "It really does mean a lot to us as a family."
Two men, both aged 19, have been arrested by South Yorkshire Police on suspicion of attempted murder and burglary.
His son Sean said: "He was only nine stone. Whoever did this could have just brushed him out of the way. They didn't have to do this."
He continued: "It's going to be impossible for him to return home after this. At the moment we are taking it day by day but we have been told the injuries are life-changing for him."
