Venezuela Leader's Relatives Held Over Drugs

Two members of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's family have been arrested in Haiti on charges of conspiring to smuggle cocaine into the US.Efrain Campos and Francisco Flores were extradited from the Caribbean nation and were set to be arraigned in a federal court in New York on Thursday.
Michael Vigil, a former head of international operations at the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), said the two suspects were arrested in Port-au-Prince after arriving from Venezuela on a private plane.
Both men were carrying diplomatic passports, although they did not have diplomatic immunity, he said. They are both believed to be nephews of Venezuela's first lady Cilia Flores.
Mr Vigil said Campos had claimed to be the Ms Flores' son and Mr Maduro's stepson.
Ms Flores, who Mr Maduro calls the "First Combatant", is one of the most-powerful members of Venezuela's revolutionary government and is a constant presence by his side whenever he appears in public.
The two travelled to Saudi Arabia for a summit this week and she is expected to be with Mr Maduro when he addressed the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva on Thursday.
Venezuela's Communications Ministry and Foreign Ministry declined to comment on the arrests.
American prosecutors have been stepping up pressure on high-ranking members of Venezuela's military, police and government officials over the country being used as an important transit zone for narcotics heading to the US and Europe.
The US government has said that more than 200 tons a year of cocaine goes through Venezuela - around a third of Colombia's estimated production.
Diosdado Cabello, president of Venezuela's National Assembly, accused the US of trying to destabilise Mr Maduro's administration ahead of elections.
Speaking on his weekly broadcast on Wednesday night, he said: "They attack him everywhere and are going to continue attacking."
