A 35-year-old man hit by a police answering a 999 call on Tuesday night has died. The pedestrian was hit in Isleworth, west London and taken to hospital suffering from critical injuries.
Two police constables were in the van and its blue lights were on, but the siren was not in use.
The Metropolitan Police said in a statement: "Next of kin have been informed but the officers await formal identification.
"The coroner has been informed and an inquest will be opened and adjourned in due course.
"As is routine, the Metropolitan Police Service Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Police Complaints Commission have been informed."
Detectives from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision to contact them on 020 8543 5157.
