An 80-year-old man who was brutally beaten by robbers at his home in Maltby, Rotherham has died in hospital, police have said.Ex-miner Tommy Ward was left for dead with a fractured skull, broken ribs and a broken jaw after robbers raided his home on 1 October last year.
He died at Rotherham Hospital on Tuesday evening, where he had been receiving treatment since the attack.
At the time, his daughter Jackie Perry told Sky News: "I couldn't believe it when I saw him. He was unrecognisable.
"Who could do this to anybody let alone an 80-year-old man."
South Yorkshire Police say a post-mortem examination will be carried out to determine Mr Ward's cause of death.
The pensioner lost his life savings during the savage attack, thought to be worth around £30,000.
Two 19-year-old men were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and burglary, but were later released with no further action.
Police have reiterated calls for anyone with information that could lead them to the burglars to come forward.
