Wrestler Guilty Of Infecting Partner With HIV

A former college wrestler faces up to 30 years in jail after he was found guilty of infecting another man with HIV and endangering four others while a college student in St Louis.

Michael L Johnson, 23, a former wrestler at Lindenwood University in St Charles, told two of his sexual partners he was infection-free when he was asked, according to court documents.

The former state high school wrestling champion in Indianapolis and junior college national champion at Lincoln College in Illinois was found not guilty on a sixth charge of exposing another man to the virus which causes AIDS.

The jury in St Charles County deliberated for two hours and 20 minutes before reaching the verdict.

During evidence, he testified: "I was scared and confused. I didn't have any knowledge of HIV. I knew it was an STD, that's all."

Police confiscated his laptop and found 32 videos of him having unprotected sex, according to the St Louis Post-Dispatch.

Philip Groenweghe, assistant county prosecutor, said: "He didn't just fail to disclose. When he was specifically asked if he was clean... he lied."

A nurse and a state disease prevention specialist testified during the trial that Johnson repeatedly insisted he was not sexually active during follow-up visits over nearly 10 months after he was diagnosed as HIV positive in January 2013.

That was despite the fact he was subsequently diagnosed with other sexually transmitted diseases including gonorrhea.

The encounters took place in Johnson's dorm room at Lindenwood University. He was expelled from the university and has remained in jail since his arrest in October 2013.
