India Arrests Minister Over Fake Degree

An Indian politician from an opposition anti-corruption party was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of forging his law degree certificate, officials said.Jitendra Tomar, law minister at state level for the territory of Delhi, allegedly never obtained the degree he listed on his nomination for local elections in February.

His Aam Aadmi anti-corruption campaign party won a landslide in the Delhi polls, beating the Bharatiya Janata Party that ruled at the federal level.

“The arrest is illegal, the matter is in court. What was the need to arrest him?,’’ Delhi Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia, told newsmen.

Delhi police chief, BS Bassi, said the move was “within the parameters of the law.”

The arrest came after the Bar Council of Delhi registered a police complaint against Tomar, who faces charges of cheating and criminal conspiracy and could face up to seven years in prison if convicted.

Investigators had gone to the eastern state of Bihar to check Tomar’s law degree and found it to be fake,” a police source told local media.

The AAP accused Delhi’s Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung, who ordered the arrest, of acting at the behest of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“This is nothing but vendetta politics,” said spokesman Ashutosh, who goes by just one name.

It was BJP’s revenge over their humiliating defeat in state elections and AAP’s huge victory.
They were trying to scuttle the functioning of the Delhi government.
