The Vatican has denied reports that the Pope has a brain tumour.National newspaper Quotidiano Nazionale has reported that the 78-year-old was secretly flown by helicopter to the San Rossore di Barbaricina clinic near Pisa "some time ago" to see Japanese doctor Takanori Fukushima.
According to the report, the Argentine pontiff was told he had "a small dark spot on the brain" which could be cured without surgery.
"The Pope is carrying out his activity with his usual high level of intensity," spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said in a statement.
"Spreading unfounded news is gravely irresponsible and is not worthy of attention."
The Pope has seemed to be in good health recently apart from sciatica which causes pains in his leg and for which he has regular physiotherapy.
The newspaper's editor, Andrea Cangini, said it expected Father Lombardi's denial but stood by its story.
Pope Francis was elected pope in March 2013.
He is the 266th pope and the first to be born outside Europe in more than 1,000 years.
